Vibro sifters and gyro screens are both circular screening machines driven by vibration, and the names are sometimes used loosely. In practice they are configured for different duties. Understanding the difference helps you ask for the right machine and compare quotations fairly.
The vibro sifter: compact checking and sieving
A vibro sifter is typically a single- or double-deck machine used where the main job is to pass good product and reject oversize, or to remove fines. Common duties include:
- check screening of powders before packing or blending,
- breaking up soft lumps and removing foreign matter,
- sieving ingredients such as flour, sugar, spices or granules.
Its compact footprint and easy dismantling make it a common choice in pharmaceutical, food and chemical plants where the machine is cleaned frequently and moved between lines.
The gyro screen: grading into several fractions
A gyro screen is generally built for grading, that is separating one feed into several size fractions in a single pass. Stacking several screening decks lets one machine deliver multiple products, for example coarse, medium and fine grades. Gyro screens are used for both dry and wet screening.
Side-by-side
| Question | Vibro sifter | Gyro screen |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Check screening, de-lumping, de-dusting | Grading into several fractions |
| Typical number of decks | One or two | Several |
| Typical industries | Pharma, food, spices, chemicals | Minerals, ceramics, fertilisers, chemicals, food |
| Cleaning and changeover | Quick, frequent | Less frequent, more decks to handle |
Questions to answer before you choose
- How many output products do you need from one feed?
- What capacity is required, and what are the bulk density and moisture of the material?
- Is the duty dry or wet screening?
- How often will the machine be cleaned or changed over between products?
- Are there hygiene or material-of-construction requirements, such as GMP or food contact?
If you are not sure which machine fits, send us your answers to these questions with a description of the material. We will recommend a machine type, size and number of decks for your application.
